Membership Information

The Federation of State Medical Boards is a national non-profit organization representing all state medical boards within the United States and its territories that license and discipline allopathic and osteopathic physicians and, in some jurisdictions, other health care professionals. FSMB membership provides state medical boards, board members and staff with a variety of opportunities to expand their professional networks; gain access to valuable resources and relationships; and develop leadership roles in the field of medical regulation.

FSMB Member Medical Boards

As FSMB Member Medical Boards, state boards gain access to valuable FSMB services and product offerings to assist them in their mission of protecting the public and promoting quality health care in their individual jurisdictions. FSMB members also have voting privileges during the Annual Business Meeting of the FSMB House of Delegates to establish policies impacting medical regulation and to shape the strategic direction of the organization.

FSMB Fellows

There are two categories of Fellow of the FSMB:

Board Member Fellow: A Board Member Fellow is an individual member who as a result of appointment or confirmation is designated to be a member of a Member Medical Board. A Board Member Fellow shall be a Fellow of the FSMB during the member’s period of service on a Member Medical Board, and for a period of thirty-six months thereafter.

Staff Fellow: A Staff Fellow is an individual hired or appointed and who is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and performance of the administrative duties and functions for which a medical board is responsible. Each member board may denote only one individual to serve as a Staff Fellow of the FSMB. No individual shall continue as a Staff Fellow upon termination of employment by or service to the Member Medical Board.

FSMB Honorary Fellows

FSMB Fellows become Honorary Fellows of the FSMB three years after completing service on a Member Medical Board.

FSMB Associate Members

An FSMB Member Medical Board may designate one or more employees or staff members, other than an individual designated as a Staff Fellow, to be an Associate Member of the FSMB. No individual shall continue as an Associate Member upon termination of employment by or service to the Member Medical Board.

Other Organizations

FSMB Official Observers

An organization may apply for Official Observer status at the Annual Business Meeting of the FSMB House of Delegates.

Benefits for FSMB Official Observers include:

  • Special seating at the Annual Business Meeting of the FSMB House of Delegates.
  • Receive the member rate on registration for the FSMB Annual Meeting.
  • Opportunities to network with various licensing and disciplinary agencies within the medical regulatory community.
  • Invitations to attend FSMB educational events.
